• Which Mud was this?

    When I was in college there was a local MUD running on campus which was pretty popular. I can't remember anything about it other then it was a standard fantasy type game, and you would basically get the objects required for each quest and throw them into a Pit. And once it was in the Pit you got points for it, and the object or monster or whatever disappeared from the game. Then eventually when all the objects and monsters were gone or dead, the game would be "Reset" and everything went back, and it was repeated.

    I think maybe it was running on software called AmberMud or something?

    Ring any bells?

    Ah, after further research I believe it was based on AberMUD. At least that seems to be the most similar name...

    Dumb question - is this a pretty common approach that MUDs take? I played on
    a few VAX (and similar) MUDs that - to my recollection - did not use this mechanic of throwing objects into a pit to advance the game collectively.
    This sounds pretty intriguing.

    I see in a later post you identified this as AberMUD (which I am familiar
    with but never, knowingly, played). Any idea if this is an AberMUD mechanic,
    or am I correct in thinking it was just coded by students.

    I believe it was specific for AberMUD game engine. It allowed a certain "shared universe" where people could work together in the environment to finish the quests, and then do it all over again after whatever time period had passed. Usually there was a set time for the refresh, maybe once a week or whatever. But it wasn't uncommon to request a reset whenever a character wanted to repeat a quest for more points or whatever.
