    That sounds like Spy Hunter. Spy vs Spy was a two-player split-screen

    There is a truck that can pick you up, and install upgrades on your car, just like in Knight Rider. Smoke, oil and missles defend while on the road. Just keep going untill the road ends on an unfinished bridge, you have to exit the freeway to a dock on the water and do a quick vehicle change.
    Good music too...
