Another weird thing I have noticed is these longer tones of dial-up handshake attempt fade after a few seconds. They appear
again for a short moment after making some noise to the microphone or sending DTMF (pressing keypad buttons).

Okay, yesteday I've tried something else. I tried to call a few BBSes with modem speaker in "always on" mode. The odd thing was that when I tried to call a certain system more than once in a row, the first connection was significantly longer than second or third one - I mean those that weren't ending with "BUSY" tone.
When trying a connection to CSD access number, the noise of exchanging data lasted for a few seconds, however the distant modem kept disconnecting regardless of giving logon data. Once I managed to get a message about authenticating, however the connection ended due to hanging up remote modem. Mine continued to send data until dropping NO CARRIER message.

I tried sending a fax to Fax Toy website, setting up the modem in fax mode and using fax capabilities of Windows. https://nicelocal.com/new-york-city/utility _service/type/cleaning_of_the_apartment/

I've changed my GSM terminal to a VoIP analog telephone adapter. Using GSM instead of a landline for dial-up doesn't work, at least with the terminal I have. Professional ones are beyond my budget, sadly. Using a terminal with CSD capabilities could work, but I'm afraid it won't handshake correctly with ordinary dial-up modems that are made for landlines. VoIP has its own issues, but at least I can connect.

Good luck! Connecting a modem to Synchronet is easy, but setting the modem up to connect with something else than a landline can be a challenge.
