I play L.O.R.D. on 3 different BBS's. I have do this for many years and really enjoy it.

Does your character persist from one BBS to another?

...every BBS has exactly the same games on their boards. No matte where Mi>> you go, Bran the Warrior WILL get ya!

I've been thinking along those lines for some time. What really differentiates one BBS from another in the modern world? Back when dialup BBSes were the norm, it was easy to see the difference. I believe this was because each BBS was, for the most part, it's own little island, with it's own core group of useres, local discussion areas, appearance. Not so much today.

Because we mostly Telnet into boards, there is no localization anymore, so no local discussion areas--oh you'll see one, but they almost have zero activity. Everything is net-boards now and most are on every board your go to, along with most the same Door stuff, as pointed out. I've also seen more boards using the stock UI than making their own; "Oh, that's a Syncronet BBS, that's a Mystic one."

So does this invalidate multiple BBSes? No. But If Sysops and users want their BBSes to more unique, and get a more retro BBS feel, then they need to break out of the global mold and start thinking locally. Get your own look, drop the some of the nets and have your own forums, Door goodies, etc. Granted, there's always gonna be a bit of duplication between BBSes, just like there was back then, but this'll help give boards their own identity and not just cookie-cutter versions.

I'd love to have more than just one BBS hangout, but so far, I haven't seen a reason to.

Only if it's a networked instance of the game (where the game data is shared among multiple BBSes).

And how has that translated to your experience?

What do you mean by "translated"?
